Ulcerative Colitis & Crohn's Disease

C.F., Ireland, January 2021

I was diagnosed with UC in November 2017 after being hospitalised, having been in an increasingly debilitated state since the birth of my daughter three months earlier.

I had my first appointment with Mazin in November 2018 after a year of incredibly frustrating and at times heart breaking toing and froing with GPs, the hospital IBD nurse and consultant, and repeated steroid treatments. At this stage I was back at work, with a one year old that seemed to never sleep and in a complete heap. I was back and forth to the bathroom most of the night in between trying to feed and settle the baby. I was taking azathioprine and mesalamine, but the treatment wasn’t working at all. I was two stone/10 kilos under my normal weight, severely anaemic and my mental health was suffering due to the strain and hopelessness of the situation. The answer I was given by the specialists was to try biologics. At this point I had no confidence in the advice I was being given.
I decided to take up a friend’s recent recommendation to try to see Mazin. I was really lucky to get a cancellation appointment quite quickly after explaining that I was in a really terrible flare with a young child. I barely made it down to Hove from London and then back home that night without having an accident, I’ll never forget it, I was at the end of my wits. But Mazin was so confident and rational. He had more of an understanding of my experience than anyone else I had spoken to and he gave me hope straight away. Then literally within two weeks of taking Mazin’s prescribed herbs and capsules (in the morning and in the evening), and as an enema when I could manage it, I noticed significant improvement. After the bleeding stopped, I still stayed weak for quite a while due to being so depleted and as a result unable to reduce the strength of the herbs for some time. Likely this was due to a combination of continued stress and because I was too afraid of fibrous food and a varied diet, therefore not building back up any strength. But I remember after being on the treatment for a good few months and with a certain amount of ebbing and flowing in my progress, that I realised I had no cramping or twinging pain anymore and I felt an enormous sense of wellbeing. I was only having one (relatively normal) bowel motion per day or once every two days. This was incredible to me. I never thought I’d get back to this point before I met Mazin. I honestly think that this is when I realised I hadn’t felt fully part of the fray of life for a long time but now felt part of the normal everyday shared experience of life once again. At my worst points with UC I was having 18+ BMs / day and losing an awful lot of blood. When I came to Mazin I was having between 10-13 BMs / day with the inevitable crippling anaemia and malnutrition. The turnaround is remarkable.
I may always have a certain amount of ebb and flow with the disease but that feels really manageable now because Mazin has helped me to understand UC, my body, and how I positively respond to the appropriate chinese herbal formulas and indeed how I can help myself. I am really confident that I can continue to have a really good quality of life. I will always have to be extremely mindful and careful of how I am managing my nutrition and dealing with life’s stresses, and take herbs as and when needed. But most importantly I have my life back, I can now enjoy family life bringing up my little girl and I can see how lovely parenting can be. I couldn’t be more grateful to Mazin and the team at Avicenna.

I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis in 2010 and whilst it was managed with minimal medication and lifestyle changes I continued to live a normal life for a few years, in blissful denial that this disease would ever be more than a minor inconvenience on occasions.  Then I became pregnant and my symptoms slowly and insidiously increased.  After my baby was born the symptoms continued to worsen gradually over the next year.  Much stronger medication was prescribed, several courses of steroids followed by immuno-suppressants, all of which failed to get the very active disease back into remission.  Things took a turn for the worse and I ended up hospitalised for the third time, facing major life-changing surgery.  Just in time, I found Mazin and began a course of Herbs.  The benefits were quick and sustained.  After one week my symptoms were already improving.  After a month, they were much reduced and after around 3-4 months they were largely resolved.  It took much longer to repair the damage and weakness I suffered as a result of being ill for so long, so I’d say it took about 9 months of treatment for me to completely recover.  I am now back to normal, living my life to the full without the need for any prescription medication.  Not a day goes by when I don’t thank my lucky stars that I found Mazin and the herbs in time.  Chinese Herbal Medicine is a safe, credible and very effective option for sufferers of this disease.  Under the care of a world-renowned specialist like Mazin you are in the very best of hands.

The following testimonial has been taken from a recent blog post written by one of our patients:

“ I just can't believe how far I have come with my condition - from being in a hospital bed this time last year, scared about what the future would hold, to now where I'm feeling like a normal teenager and like myself again!

I don't know where I would be without Dr.Mazin at Avicenna and I am grateful everyday for my parents finding him online and creating my friendship with him, where I don't feel nervous about asking questions or getting upset.  He has treated me like a normal human being and that's exactly what I needed to feel good again, to get my self-esteem back. I am not treated like another patient, I am treated like a teenage girl going through a horrible chronic illness where I am not patronised or given any pity."

I was diagnosed with the Crohn’s disease in 2009, which was kept in control with Pentasa until 2013.  Beginning of 2013, I had an acute relapse and a 10cm inflammation on my colon was discovered through the colonoscopy in April 2013.  My doctor wanted to put me on some strong immune supressors but I was against it.  While searching for alternative treatments, a friend who was treated by Mazin for another illness recommended him to me.

After a few months I started the treatment, and began feeling much healthier and more energetic than I have been for a long time.  After 9 months on Mazin’s treatment I had another colonoscopy and the inflammation was completely healed.

Thank you Mazin!

When I was first diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitis my local hospital decided to treat me like any other similar patient.  I was put on a treatment of steroids and told to attend a follow-up appointment in a month's time.  The treatment had no effect on my condition and almost seemed to make it worse.  The main problem was the feeling of a lack of control, when I felt there was more to this problem and how my body was responding.

I was extremely lucky to have had the Avicenna Centre recommended to me.  My diagnoses and an explanation of my condition was made crystal clear.  My treatment had instant results and I suddenly felt a sense of control.

If and when I have a flare up, I am very aware of how it has happened.  This understanding of my own body has come from such insight and knowledge of the Centre and especially Mazin.

I was diagnosed with Ulcerative Colitus in 2002.  Initial symptoms were mild, and more or less controlled using steroids and maintainance drugs.  However the maintainance drugs triggered side effects and had to be stopped and the condition was never fully controlled.  On the suggestion of friends I visited a Chinese medicine practitioner who used herbal treatments and acupuncture.  As a result I enjoyed many years symptom free.

In 2009 however the condition returned much more acutely than before with much pain, exhaustion and bleeding.  I was admitted to hospital and after two weeks treatment, the condition was still not controlled and I was started on a course of Inflixomab.  This controlled the condition and I was released from hospital.  A year later a serious allergic reaction to Inflixomab developed and this prevented any further use.  Inflixomab  was replaced by Ciclosporin which initially worked well, but stopped working after about 10 months.

Another acute relapse followed with symptoms as in 2009.  I had been advised that if the Ciclosporin failed, surgery to remove the large bowel would be the only option available.  TCM had brought good results in the past and with some research I discovered Mazin at Avicenna.

Mazin started a treatment of Chinese herbs and a recommended diet, which was modified and reduced over the period of treatment as my condition improved.  Within a day or two I felt improvement, within two weeks I could function more or less normally although very tired and now less than three months later I am symptom and drug free, feeling very good and eating normally.

Many thanks to Mazin who demonstrated great skill in diagnosis and treatment.

I have suffered from Ulcerative Colitis for 26 years.  It made my life a misery, 24 hours a day.  At times I couldn’t leave the house, trying to take a holiday was unbearable; the fear of the airport and the flight was overwhelming and even if I did manage to get away I often spent the whole trip in the hotel room.

Conventional medicine has never been any help; the only thing that made any difference was Chinese herbs.  So when they started to have less of an effect and the bouts started to worsen I was really at my wit’s end.  Luckily someone suggested Avicenna and all I can say is that I just wish I’d seen Mazin years ago!  All my dealings with the centre have been so friendly and professional, and they really put me at ease.

Although the treatment was quite intensive within 2 and a half months I started to get my life back.  I love the sachets - they make life so much simpler, compared to all the boiling, draining and smelly house.

I am so much happier I feel like I have a new lease of life.  I know I will have more bouts but as soon as I get the warning signs I will ring Mazin and get them back under control and I’m very hopeful that this year I will enjoy my holiday!

I receive treatment under Mazin Al-Khafaji for Crohn's disease.  Thanks to Mazin's expertise in Chinese Medicine, I enjoy long periods of good health and I am absolutely convinced as to the efficacy of TCM in treating this condition.  Recent tests have demonstrated that the Crohn's is actually less advanced than it was when I was diagnosed in 1995.  I would not hesitate to recommend TCM for any condition and Mazin Al-Khafaji as a practitioner.  I am happy to make the 100 mile round trip to see Mazin, such has been the uplift in my own health.

I have suffered from Ulcerative Colitis for over 21 years and have been largely in remission during most of that time.  My flare would come on average every 5 years and would be quickly managed with a controlled course of prednisolone followed by balasalazide to maintain my remission.

In April 2012 what started was the worst flare I have had to date.  I persevered but kept having returning symptoms and was classified as prednisolone dependant.  I was moved on to immunosuppressants in the form of Azathioprine which did not work.  The next step they told me would be surgery.  I tried many supplements/herbs/potions and the like and decided on trying Chinese herbs.  I wanted to make sure I was not self-medicating and set about identifying someone who was internationally recognised for their specialism in TCM for inflammatory bowel diseases.

Mazin, I found ticked this box.  He is easy to research as I found various reviews anecdotally on the web followed by further research into his clinic in Brighton.  Although 3 hours from where I live in the UK I was determined even in a flare state to have what I considered the best treatment, even if it meant travelling a long distance (later appointment can be telephone ones).

From my first meeting with Mazin I gained confidence from not only his approach but also his understanding of my disease.  Who would have thought a treatment plan that would stop a flare and not just maintain through toxic medication but heal the  residual damage instead with natural herbs.  I was still sceptical due to previous setbacks.  I had nothing to lose but my colon!

What followed was a treatment of herbs sourced and made to excellent standards.  Treatment was external and internal and this gave me further confidence as I needed relief of knowing both sides were being utilised.  My flare was complicated and in summary Mazin kept me going with his understanding of the problems and his patience with all my questions at each appointment.  The herbs would be tailored to my ever changing symptoms and things started to improve.  If the NHS had identified my lactose intolerance earlier instead of branding my remaining issues as IBS i would have healed a lot sooner. In summary a year after starting treatment with Mazin I was healed and felt normal again. Something I had long given up hope of ever achieving!

At the time of writing this review (13/01/2016) I have the pleasure of having had a sigmoidoscopy results which show NO INFLAMMATION!  So not just a symptomatic remission but a clinical one.  Not only that this remission has proven to be much better than the ones I have had in the past.  I cannot thank Mazin and his team enough for all that they have done.  I would encourage any fellow sufferer to not lose hope (or your colon) until you have tried Mazins treatment.

Many thanks.
